The Leisure Skills Program is designed to teach parents how to adopt leisure pursuits conducive to coping or adapting to the community in which they live. The Program consists of 11 two-hour sessions.
Of particular concern are parents who are involved in leisure activities that are related to antisocial or other behavioral problems, e.g. substance abuse, compulsive gambling, membership in antisocial gangs. This Program may serve as a useful adjunct to treatment program that specifically target such behaviors.
Objectives Broadening understanding of leisure, of the role leisure plays in society, and of the range of activities it encompasses; demonstrating how leisure, as part of a balanced lifestyle, can contribute to personal development, life satisfaction and well-being, and to the well-being of society; helping to understand the connection between personal leisure needs, values and interests; enabling parents to learn about and experience a wider range of leisure activities; teaching basic skills to reach leisure goals, including: effective planning for leisure, overcoming challenges and obstacles, time-management, creative ways to undertake low-cost leisure, and strategies to overcome personal doubts and fears concerning new activities.
